How often do you realize the importance of a garage? You may use the garage for parking the car, as a storage facility, or as a workshop. It is possible that you use the garage for pretty much all of the reasons in the previous sentence. However, have you ever given a thought to its lighting?
All the serious DIY work that you’ll do in the garage needs good lighting. A poorly-lit garage can do you no good. The use of premium-quality lighting fixtures can help prevent falls and injuries during work, as it will promote visibility. Here are 6 ways to illuminate your garage and enhance its safety, efficiency, and aesthetics!
There are a plethora of lighting fixtures, Choose wisely!
When it comes to lighting a garage people do not look beyond the overhead lighting fixture category. Well, that’s bad! You must not fall for age-old traditions that tell that garage lighting must be enough to meet the need. Go window shopping, visit online stores before you find lighting fixtures that serve various purposes. There are task lights, ambient lights, and even accent lights. You might want some of them in your garage.
It is always better to choose LED garage lighting fixtures as they come with lots of benefits. Remember to choose your garage lights by the function they will serve. Suppose you need a fixture that consumes little energy to put out high lumen output, you must shop for an LED high bay lighting fixture.
Measure and Determine
The amount of light put out by an electric bulb is calculated in lumens. The standard lumen requirement for residential garages is 50 lumens, per square foot. For garages that function as workshops, the lumen requirement goes up to 300 lumens per square foot.
Also, you should never settle down for lighting fixtures that offer poor Color Rendering Index. (CRI) Always aim for a fixture that provides CRI of above 80.
Wattage Matters
You must know how many lighting fixtures will the garage need. Doing so will be useful while setting a budget for the shopping so that you don’t end up spending too much. You can calculate the wattage by Multiplying the standard lumens guideline by the square footage of the garage. Calculating the wattage will allow you to figure out how many light bulbs will meet your light output needs.
Replace the Incandescents!
Seriously, incandescent bulbs are as old as time itself. (well, not exactly!) The only places they are now famous are either bars or cafes, where people go out to chill down. Unlike a garage or a workshop, bars and cafes do not need showers of lighting. (sometimes they do!) Thus, you must replace the Incandescents with LED garage lighting fixtures. Illuminating your garage with energy-efficient LED fixtures that deliver the same light output as incandescent bulbs at a lower wattage is an excellent idea. The replacement will also help cut down on utility bills while saving energy. For instance, a 10-Watt LED bulb can provide the same light output as a 60-Watt incandescent bulb. Think about it!
Try the T
If you want to think outside the traditional idea box, you must replace the classic metal halide bulbs with T5 or T8 LED tubes. The LED tubes are better than conventional bulbs because they do not flicker and are ‘instant-on’ fixtures. Since you may use the garage for a number of reasons, layering the garage with different types of fixtures will be a good idea.
Billie Jean it!
Oh! Who does not know about Michael Jackson’s iconic “Billie Jean ”! The only thing that should probably catch your attention in the video (Apart from MJ!) is the lighting effect while the singer moves around the block. Yes, you’ve got it right. It’s the motion sensor lighting effect.
Having lights that can sense motions can make all the difference in your garage. Wouldn’t it be nice to enter a garage that lights up on its own? You can either purchase a motion sensor that’s compatible with the LED or choose a lighting fixture that comes with a motion sensor.
So, that was all. I hope your mind is lit and cool like an LED. ow, go on and think about what changes do you want to make in your garage. Do you want to Billie Jean it? Or are you okay with a garage that looks like a zombie’s cafe? Decide and act!
